Laser printer ghosting: why faint copies repeat down the page and how to stop it

Laser printer ghosting is when a faint copy of text, a logo or a picture appears again further down the same page. The ghost is always the same distance below the original, and that fixed distance is the most useful clue you have. This guide explains how to confirm you are dealing with ghosting, how to fix it with free changes first and how to work out which part to replace if the settings are not the problem.

Is it really ghosting?
Several faults look similar at first glance. Print one page that has a solid black block or a bold heading near the top and nothing else below it, then look closely at the blank area.
- Ghosting: a lighter copy of the block appears lower down, perhaps more than once, each time at the same spacing. Sometimes the copy is a “negative” ghost: a slightly lighter patch inside a grey or coloured area.
- Previous page showing through: a faint image of the previous job appears on the next sheet. This is a related problem, usually caused by the drum not being fully cleaned between pages, and the same fixes apply.
- Smearing or rubbing off: toner smudges when you run a finger over it. That is a fusing problem; see printer smudging ink.
- Doubled or blurred text on an inkjet: inkjets do not ghost in this way. Blurred or doubled inkjet text needs a print head alignment.
Why ghosting happens
A laser printer builds each page on a rotating drum. The drum is charged, a laser draws the image as a pattern of charge, toner sticks to that pattern and is transferred to the paper, and a heated fuser melts it in place. A cleaning blade and a discharge step then reset the drum for the next turn. If any toner or charge survives that reset, or if some toner sticks to the fuser roller instead of the paper, it is printed again one full turn later. That is why the ghost sits at a distance equal to the circumference of the part that caused it.
Fix 1: Match the paper type setting
This is free and fixes more cases than anything else. The printer adjusts transfer and fusing for the paper type you choose. If you print on heavy paper with the setting on plain paper, or on thin paper with a heavy or label setting, toner can stay behind and reappear.
- In the print dialog, open Printer properties or Preferences (Windows) or the printer options section (Mac) and set the media type or paper type to match the paper loaded.
- If the printer has its own paper type setting on its control panel, set it there too.
- Feed thick paper, labels and envelopes from the manual or multipurpose tray if your printer has one.
Some drivers include an option to reduce ghosting or improve toner fixing. Check the driver’s advanced or quality options and read its help text before enabling it, because these options can make other problems worse in some conditions.
Fix 2: Check the paper and the room
- Use paper made for laser printers. Coated paper meant for inkjets can disturb toner transfer.
- Open a fresh ream. Paper that has absorbed moisture causes uneven transfer.
- Preprinted letterheads need ink that tolerates fuser heat; if ghosting only appears on those forms, test with plain paper.
- Very dry air and very humid air both affect how toner holds its charge. Move the printer away from radiators, air conditioning vents and windows, and check the temperature and humidity range in the printer’s manual.
Fix 3: Clean the drum and the paper path
Switch the printer off, let it cool, then remove the toner cartridge and drum assembly. Many printers with a separate drum unit have a documented drum cleaning procedure in the manual, and some have a corona wire cleaner tab you slide gently from end to end. Brush or lift loose toner from the cavity with a dry lint-free cloth. Do not use a household vacuum cleaner, because ordinary vacuums are not designed for fine toner dust.

Fix 4: Measure the repeat to find the part
If the settings and cleaning do not help, use a ruler to measure from the top of the original image to the top of its ghost. Each rotating part has its own circumference, so each leaves a ghost at its own spacing.

The exact distances differ from model to model. Search your printer manufacturer’s support site for your model name together with “repetitive defect” or “repeating defect” to find the chart for your printer, or look in the service section of the manual.
Ghosting together with grey or black pages
Ghosting usually comes on gradually. If it arrives together with a grey background over the whole page, heavy black bands or completely black pages, the problem is more serious than ghosting alone: the drum is not being charged properly, the drum is damaged, or toner is not being controlled. Check that the drum and toner are seated correctly and that the drum unit is not past its rated life on the printer’s status or supplies report. A known good drum or cartridge is the quickest test. Inkjet printers
Inkjets put ink directly on the paper and have no drum or fuser, so true ghosting does not happen. Doubled lines or blurred edges point to a misaligned print head. Run Print head alignment from the maintenance menu, and see printer printing lines or streaks for nozzle and banding problems.

When to replace a part, and when not to
- Drum unit: the usual fix for persistent ghosting. On printers where the drum is inside the toner cartridge, a new cartridge replaces it.
- Toner cartridge: worth trying when the ghost changes as toner runs low, or when a different cartridge clears it.
- Fuser: a heavier repair. The fuser gets very hot, so let the printer cool fully before touching anything near it, and follow the manual exactly if it is user-replaceable.
Check the price of the part against the price of a comparable new printer before ordering. A fuser for a small home laser printer can cost a large share of the printer’s value, while drums and toner cartridges are routine consumables.
